| A flight of four F-105s was sent into the western region of North Vietnam on an armed reconnaissance mission and attacked a barracks near Son La, 105 miles west of Hanoi and 25 miles north of the Laotian border. On his second strafing run, Capt Schierman’s aircraft (call sign Elm 1) was hit by small arms fire and he was forced to eject. Schierman, who had been a pilot on F-89s and F-94s with the Washington ANG and had flown DC-4s for Northwest Airlines before being assigned to active duty, was captured on his 37th combat mission and spent the next seven and a half years in prison. He was released from captivity on 12 February 1973. After leaving the Air Force following his release, Wesley Schierman resumed his career with Northwest Airlines and became a Boeing 747 captain. |
