| A FAC was lost about 15 miles southwest of the A Shau Valley during a visual reconnaissance mission over the Trail to scout for suitable targets. Other aircrew heard Capt Gourley and 1Lt Dotson radio that the aircraft (call sign Misty) had been hit and that they were about to eject. One of the witnesses reported seeing at least one parachute but neither of the men were recovered at the time. In December 2001 the crash site was excavated and human remains recovered which were confirmed as being those of Capt Gourley and 1Lt Dotson in August 2002. |
