| In November 1968 VMO-6 received the first of its new OV-10A Broncos to supplement the O-1s it had received only four months earlier. The OV-10 was a significant improvement over the O-1 in terms of speed and firepower and was used in the higher threat areas. The Squadron’s first OV-10 to be lost was shot down during a visual reconnaissance mission on 29 May. A Bronco crew spotted a raft on a river near Lang Chei, seven miles south of Khe Sanh. Rafts were frequently used by the VC and NVA to transport supplies to their forces in the field. The aircraft dived to attack the raft but as it was pulling up from its attack it was hit by AAA. The port engine caught fire and the crew ejected a few miles from the river. They were later rescued by a Marine Corps CH-46 helicopter and quickly returned to Quang Tri. |
