| The Hancock suffered its second non-combat loss within the space of five days. A Skyhawk was launched on a night strike from one of the ship’s catapults but was seen to pitch down and crash into the sea and explode. The pilot was killed. This was a particularly tragic accident in that the Hancock was due to finish its spell of line duty the very next day. The ship returned to North Island on 3 March having lost three A-4s and an F-8 in combat and six F-8s and a single A-4 in accidents during its fifth war cruise. |
