| The Wolfpack suffered its first combat loss of 1969 during a Steel Tiger mission in southern Laos. A flight of Phantoms scouted along a road about 10 miles east of Ban Talan on the lookout for trucks or other targets. The flight attacked a target but Lt Col Clement’s aircraft (call sign Honda 3) was hit in the fuselage by 37mm AAA. The aircraft burst into flames and the crew ejected safely a few miles to the west. The crew were rescued by a HH-3E helicopter from Nakhon Phanom piloted by Lt Lance A Eagan of the US Coast Guard. |
