| A Phantom (call sign Dover 1) was shot down by AAA during an armed reconnaissance mission just south of Dong Hoi. Lt Col D’Amico was strafing a gun emplacement when his aircraft was hit and one of the engines damaged. With the aircraft on fire, he flew out to sea and he and his WSO ejected about 15 miles off the coast northeast of the DMZ. Both men were recovered by a USAF HH-3E helicopter the next day although it was hit by enemy fire from Tiger Island during the rescue and had to be abandoned but both crews were then rescued by other HH-3s. 1Lt Wilburn was doubly fortunate to be rescued in that he had been shot down a few weeks earlier while taking off from Da Nang on 26 August 1968. |
