| The A-6B variant of the Intruder was a modification of the basic A-6A for the specialised Iron Hand defence suppression mission. The aircraft could carry the huge AGM-78 Standard ARM and also had an array of associated radars and other avionics. Only 19 A-6Bs were converted from standard A-6As but they were extensively used by a number of Intruder squadron in Southeast Asia. The first A-6B to be lost was being launched from the Constellation when it was found that its leading edge slats would not fully retract so the aircraft lost lift and hit the water. Both crew ejected as the aircraft ditched in the Gulf of Tonkin |
