Capt John Wayne Held (KIA)

An A-37 Dragonfly was lost with its pilot during a close air support mission near Song Be, 70 miles north of Saigon. The aircraft (call sign Rap) had been scrambled from Bien Hoa and was hit by automatic weapons fire as Capt Held made his third pass attacking a Viet Cong gun pit. He ejected from the aircraft as it burst into flames and was seen to parachute to the ground. Although a US Army helicopter arrived within 20 minutes and lowered a man to the ground all he could find was an empty parachute. A USAF HH-43F from the 38th ARRS also joined the search but Capt Held was never found. It was presumed that he had been captured and killed by the VC.
