By April 1968 the TA-4F had replaced the TF-9J in the Tactical Air Coordination (Airborne) and visual reconnaissance roles. A three-aircraft detachment was operated by H&MS-11 as fast FACs in areas that were considered to be too dangerous for the slow flying O-1 FAC aircraft. Known as Playboys after their radio call sign, the TA-4Fs became much sought after assets in the area around the DMZ. Col Frey and Maj Newon were attacking an enemy village just seven miles south of Da Nang when they were shot down by small arms fire on their second pass. The crew ejected but were rescued by a Marine Corps helicopter. |
