| The danger of multiple passes over the same target was illustrated once more when a Phantom was shot down during a strike near Ban Katoi. On his fifth run Capt Whitteker was using his external cannon pod to strafe trucks on a road leading to the Ban Karai Pass when his aircraft (call sign Gunfighter) was hit by automatic weapons or small arms fire. The Phantom crashed immediately and neither of the crew were seen to eject from the aircraft. Lt Badley had survived being shot down on 20 November 1967 near the DMZ with Capt Martin who was killed in the incident. |
