It was not just at Khe Sanh that enemy tank had been seen and engaged. During an armed reconnaissance mission 10 miles west of the Pathet Lao stronghold of Sam Neua, a flight of Skyraiders came upon a number of North Vietnamese tanks. Whether the tanks were on their way south to take part in the siege of Khe Sanh or the Tet offensive or were being used to support the Pathet Lao is not known. Wherever the destination, the Skyraiders attacked the tanks but Capt Kimminau’s aircraft (call sign Firefly 1) was hit by ground fire. He managed to fly about 10 miles to the west before he had to eject from the aircraft. He was rescued by an Air America helicopter.
