| The Ticonderoga arrived back on the line on 13 January, the first aircraft carrier to start a fourth cruise of the war. The first aircraft lost during this cruise was a Crusader that crashed in the Gulf of Tonkin as it was escorting a photographic reconnaissance aircraft, probably an RF-8G from the VFP-63 detachment on board the carrier. The escorting aircraft’s engine failed after a sudden loss of oil pressure and the pilot was lost in the subsequent crash. The loss was not thought to have been due to enemy action. |
