Below are the details of the loss you selected from the list of search results:

Date: 2 February 1968
Aircraft type: F-8E Crusader
Serial Number: 150667
Military Unit: VF-191
Service: USN
Home Base: USS Ticonderoga
Name(s):
Lt Peter Frederick Cherney (KWF)

The Ticonderoga arrived back on the line on 13 January, the first aircraft carrier to start a fourth cruise of the war. The first aircraft lost during this cruise was a Crusader that crashed in the Gulf of Tonkin as it was escorting a photographic reconnaissance aircraft, probably an RF-8G from the VFP-63 detachment on board the carrier. The escorting aircraft’s engine failed after a sudden loss of oil pressure and the pilot was lost in the subsequent crash. The loss was not thought to have been due to enemy action.
