| During a night armed reconnaissance sortie over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in southern Laos, a T-28 (call sign Zorro 16) suddenly lost oil pressure, which eventually caused total engine failure. Capt Brown was just about to take over from an O-2 FAC which was directing strikes against trucks on the Trail when trouble struck. The O-2 followed the burning T-28 as it tried to make for a safe area but Capt Brown had to bail out after a few minutes, still over enemy-held territory. He landed safely and hid from enemy troops who were searching for him in the dark. In the morning the SAR force realised that Capt Brown had come down next to an NVA battalion base camp but was picked up by a USAF HH-3E helicopter after suppressive fire and a smoke screen had been laid down. |
