| The CO of VMA(AW)-242 and his navigator flew an attack on Kien An airfield near Haiphong on the night of the 25th. Radio and radar contact was lost with the aircraft (call sign Packard) and a Peking radio broadcast claimed that an aircraft had been shot down in the vicinity of Haiphong. Nothing more was known of the fate of the crew until a joint US and Vietnamese team of investigators excavated a crash site in Haiphong province in 1993 and 1995. Some remains were found at the site and other bone fragments were handed over by villagers. On 26 June 1997 the mortal remains of the two Marine airmen arrived at Travis AFB for final burial at home. Lt Col Abrams was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on 9 July. |
