Capt Harrison Hoyt Klinck (KIA)

Later in the day the Korat Wing flew a raid against a barge construction yard at Thuy Phoung on the Red River just north of Hanoi. Barges and other shallow-draught vessels were critical elements in North Vietnam’s attempts to resupply its troops in South Vietnam. The barge yard was close to several of the SAM sites that ringed Hanoi and as the strike force approached the target it was met by a volley of missiles. Maj Vissotzky was jinking at 16,000 feet but failed to shake one of the missiles, which exploded close to his aircraft (call sign Tampa). The aircraft crashed 15 miles west of Hanoi and Maj Vissotzky ejected and was captured. Raymond Vissotzky was released from captivity on 14 March 1973.

Another formation of F-105s was a few minutes behind the first wave. The SAMs were still very active and Capt Klinck’s aircraft (call sign Fresno) was hit by a missile at 11,000 feet just south of the target. The aircraft headed north and crashed near Vinh Yen, almost 20 miles away from where it was hit. Capt Klinck may have been wounded as he was not seen to eject from the aircraft. 61-0208 was painted as ‘Mr Bulldog’ while with the 469th. Four US aircraft had been shot down by SAMs during the day in which 94 SA-2 missile launches had been counted.
