| A flight of Phantoms from Da Nang was sent on an armed reconnaissance mission that resulted in an attack on a military storage area on the coast about eight miles southeast of Dong Hoi. As Col Maloy (call sign Stilletto 1) dived on the target his aircraft was hit by AAA, which caused the starboard engine to fail. The aircraft sped out to sea but it soon became obvious that it was not going to reach Da Nang and the crew ejected about five miles off the coast. They were both rescued by two HH-3E helicopters from the 37th ARRS. |
