Military Unit: VMFA-323, MAG-13
Service: USMC
Home Base: Chu Lai
Name(s):
Lt Col Edison Wainwright Miller (POW)
1Lt James Howie Warner (POW)

The CO of VMFA-323 was shot down when he was diverted to attack two tracked vehicles that had been seen just north of the DMZ. As Lt Col Miller was pulling up from his attack, the aircraft (call sign Black Ace 175) was hit by 37mm AAA. Edison Miller headed south but both crew had to eject just inland from Cap Mui Lay, while still over the DMZ buffer zone. Aircrew who came down within the buffer zone normally stood a good chance of being rescued but luck was not on their side on Friday the 13th and both Miller and Warner were soon captured and imprisoned. Edison Miller and Cdr W E Wilber alienated themselves from the rest of the POWs by making propaganda tapes and cooperating with the North Vietnamese in other ways while in prison. Lt Col Miller was eventually released on 12 February and Warner on 14 March 1973.
