| The day after making the dramatic rescue of Lt A D Perkins in Haiphong Harbour, Lt Melecosky and his crew attempted to rescue Maj R W Barnett, an F-105 pilot who had been shot down near Uong Bi. Just as the UH-2 reached Maj Barnett’s position enemy AAA guns opened up. The helicopter had flown into a flak trap and was badly damaged by AAA and turned back out to sea leaking fuel from a damaged fuel tank. Soon after crossing the coast near Haiphong the Seaspite’s fuel ran out and the helicopter landed in the sea. The crew were soon rescued by an SH-3A Sea King from HS-2. |
