Lt Cdr Peter VanRuyter Schoeffel (POW)

Lt Cdr Schoeffel was flying a flak suppression mission during a raid on a ferry one mile north of Haiphong when he was shot down and captured. He had just fired his rockets at a gun site and was pulling up when the aircraft (call sign Active Boy 200) was hit by AAA and instantly became uncontrollable. With the aircraft rolling and on fire and the cockpit full of smoke, the pilot ejected. He was soon captured and taken to the Hanoi Hilton. He was released on 14 March 1973. Peter Schoeffel was flying his 125th combat mission over Southeast Asia when he was shot down.
