| VMFA-542 lost its third F-4 of the year during an attack on an anti-aircraft gun site on the coast two miles north of the DMZ. The aircraft (call sign Castor Oil 195) was hit in the engine compartment by ground fire as it pulled up from its first attack. Maj Cole turned out to sea but he and his navigator were forced to eject about seven miles out to sea. Although a US Navy ship rescued Maj Cole, 1Lt Moe was killed during the incident when he fell into the sea before his parachute fully opened. |
