Maj Munsch was flying a close air support mission in support of the 2nd Brigade of the 559th Infantry Regiment about 15 miles west of the town of My Tho in the Mekong Delta region when he was shot down. As he came down to low level to make his first napalm drop on the target his aircraft (call sign Buzzard) was hit by automatic weapons fire and badly damaged. He managed to fly towards My Tho and ejected close to the town where he was rescued by an Army helicopter.
