| Capt Herbert William Moore (KIA) |
| A flight of four F-105s was sent on a strike against a road bridge at Xom Cul in the hills, 55 miles northwest of Dong Hoi. As Capt Moore dived his aircraft (call sign Waco 2) at the target it was hit by anti-aircraft fire and he ejected close to the bridge. A SAR helicopter crew later spotted his empty parachute on the ground and his emergency beeper was heard. Voice contact could not be made with Capt Moore but the beeper was heard again several hours later. Although the search resumed the next day, Capt Moore was never heard of again and is presumed to have perished in the hills either as a result of the ejection or at the hands of the North Vietnamese. Thunderchief 61-0078 was painted as ‘Sitting Pretty’ during its service with the 469th. |
