VMA(AW)-533 was the second Marine Corps A-6 squadron to deploy to Southeast Asia and had arrived at Chu Lai on 1 April. Like VMA(AW)-242, the Squadron flew mainly in support of Marine ground forces in the northern provinces of South Vietnam, but it also flew Rolling Thunder strikes against targets in the North. The Squadron lost its first aircraft (call sign Armourplate) during a night strike on storage buildings a few miles to the east of Hon Gay. Maj Bacik was making his run over the target at about 1,500 feet and 450 knots when the aircraft was hit by AAA and crashed. It appears that the crew did not have a chance to escape from the Intruder before it crashed. |
