| Capt Robert Carl Wistrand (KIA) |
| During an armed reconnaissance mission over the Steel Tiger area of Laos the AAA defences surrounding the Mu Gia Pass were attacked. The ever-increasing number of anti-aircraft gun sites protecting the pass was causing concern and resulted in missions flown specifically to knock them out. When diving on a gun position Capt Wistrand’s aircraft (call sign Cadillac 22) was hit and crashed immediately, no ejection being seen or SAR beeper heard. Like many US aircrew posted missing in action in Southeast Asia, Capt Wistrand was promoted (to the rank of Colonel) before his death was officially accepted. |
