| During an armed reconnaissance mission just north of the DMZ a flight of F-4s spotted a barge on an inland waterway near Van Xuan, 10 miles south of Dong Hoi. Capt Wilson put his Phantom into a 45-degree dive from 9,000 feet to bomb the target but his aircraft (call sign Phantom 5) was hit by AAA and caught fire. The crew ejected safely but were captured by NVA troops before they could be rescued. They were both imprisoned for the rest of the war and released on 14 March 1973. 1Lt Chambers was on his 101st mission of his tour when he was shot down. |
