| The USAF lost two more F-105s in a mid-air collision on the 3rd when one of them struck the other as it disconnected from a KC-135 tanker over Laos en route to a mission. Both pilots ejected and were rescued by a HH-3E but Capt Bischoff died of his injuries while the other survived and the remainder of the strike force proceeded to its target in North Vietnam. This was the second time that 1Lt West had to abandon an aircraft within a week as he had ejected from his F-105 on 29 July during a strike mission. 1Lt West was sent to hospital in Japan but returned to active duty in 1968. He later flew with Eastern Airlines after retiring from the USAF. |
