| Two RF-4C crews were tasked with a daylight photographic reconnaissance mission along Route 15 near Vinh. The lead aircraft (call sign Baltic) was hit by small arms fire as it started its photo run at low level about five miles west of the city. Col Hynds immediately put the aircraft into a hard right turn but the Phantom crashed a few moments later killing both the crew. In 1989 the Vietnamese handed over a box of remains claiming them to be those of Col Hynds. However, in 1999 these remains were re-examined and found to be those of Capt Cunningham. Personal items from both the crew have been seen in a Vietnamese war museum. |
