| In the continuing search for SAM sites near the DMZ an Iron Hand flight from Takhli lost an aircraft to AAA. Maj Osborne’s flight was trolling the area. This involved deliberately flying through a known threat area at a medium speed and altitude in the hope that a SAM site would try a shot and thereby reveal itself to the Iron Hand flight. Eight miles northwest of Thon Cam Son Maj Osborne’s aircraft (call sign Buckskin) was hit in the fuselage by anti-aircraft fire. The aircraft did not seem too badly damaged so the pilot decided to make for Takhli. However, Maj Osborne was forced to eject 35 miles northwest of Ubon and was subesquently rescued by a HH-43 from Ubon. |
