| Lt Cdr Haines was tasked with photographing the railway line near Thanh Hoa and had started his run at 3,500 feet and 520 knots when his Crusader (call sign Cork Tip 902) was hit by AAA. The hydraulics and electrical systems failed instantly and the pilot ejected as he lost control of the aircraft. During the ejection he broke his right kneecap and his left leg was also injured. As commander of the VFP-63 detachment on board the Bon Homme Richard, he had flown 40 missions since the ship started operations in February. Lt Cdr Haines was released on 4 March 1973 and retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1987. |
