| Two Voodoos from Udorn were sent on a mission to photograph army barracks at Kep, just a few miles south of the airfield and close to Hanoi. The aircraft crossed Laos and North Vietnam (dodging thunderstorms just north of the DMZ) to reach the Gulf of Tonkin then turned north to recross the coast near Haiphong and approach Kep from the west. Over the partially cloud-covered target the flak was intense and the two Voodoos lost sight of each other but Maj Maddox called to his wingman that he had been hit. The other Voodoo saw no trace of Maj Maddox’s aircraft (call sign Drill), which was almost certainly hit by flak although Red Crown reported that a MiG was also in the vicinity. The aircraft is reported as having crashed near Tien Yen, some 60 miles east of Kep and within a few miles of the coast and (relative) safety. |
