| VC-5 was a Navy utility squadron based at Cubi Point NAS in the Philippines operating a variety of aircraft including US-2 Trackers, A-4 Skyhawks and even the ancient Beech SNB. The Squadron’s duties included target towing and logistics and it was while on a logistics flight that a Tracker suffered an engine fire and crashed. The Veteran’s Memorial Wall database claims that the aircraft crashed on land in Kien Giang province in the southern tip of South Vietnam but the official Navy account states that the aircraft crashed in the sea.
On this day a total of seven MiG-17s were shot down by USAF F-4s and F-105s in a major air battle during a strike on the Yen Vien railway yard. Five of the MiGs were shot down by Thunderchiefs. |
