| Following their mauling at Thanh Hoa the F-105s from Korat returned to armed reconnaissance but now this mission had extended from Laos into North Vietnam itself. Capt Gay’s aircraft was shot down by ground fire while hunting for trucks on Route 9 in the mountainous region near Ban Pang. He was fortunate to be rescued by a USAF HH-43 helicopter. |
