Maj Paul R Craw (Survived)

The border town of Dien Bien Phu, better known for its role in a previous war in Southeast Asia, was visited infrequently by the USAF. However, like any North Vietnamese town, there was always a hot reception waiting for any aircraft that ventured near. A flight of F-105s was sent to bomb construction equipment that had been seen near the town. Maj Craw’s aircraft (call sign Steel 10) was hit in the port wing by 37mm anti-aircraft fire as it dived on the target. He flew about 10 miles to the west of Dien Bien Phu before he was forced to eject. Despite being over 170 miles from the Thai border, Maj Craw was rescued by a HH-3E from Udorn in one of the few rescue missions to this region of North Vietnam.
