| It was a tragic coincidence that MAC should lose another Starlifter in Vietnam so soon after the ground collision on 23 March. Less than three weeks after the first accident a Starlifter crashed into the sea soon after take off from Cam Ranh Bay at night killing six of the eight men on board. US Navy patrol boats and USAF HH-43s took part in the rescue and recovery operations. The accident was caused by the spoilers deploying during take off due to a checklist omission. These two were the only strategic transports lost by MAC in Southeast Asia during the war in Southeast Asia although a C-5 crashed near Saigon during the evacuation on 4 April 1975. |
