| Two Phantoms on a coastal reconnaissance mission had just started their run along the coast near Cam Pha, 15 miles east of Hon Gay, when they ran into AAA. Although the flak bursts appeared to be some distance away and the aircraft emerged unscathed, Lt Ritchie reported hydraulic failure 15 minutes later. The aircraft (call sign Show Time 610) flew out to sea but 20 miles south of Hon Gay Lt Ritchie’s aircraft suddenly became uncontrollable and the crew ejected. They were both picked up safely by a Navy helicopter, Clementine 1, a UH-2B from HC-1 Det 17, Lieutenant Jaque Lloyd Meiling, pilot, Lieutenant Andrew James Curtin, co-pilot, ADJ3 Richard H. Hall, and Airman Allen E. Salsbury, flying from guided missile destroyer England (DLG-22). |
