Capt Harry J Hennigar (Survived)

The waterways of North Vietnam were navigable by small boats for considerable distances from the coast and were an important part of the country’s transport system. Armed reconnaissance missions often included attacks on small craft that could be carrying weapons and supplies as part of the war effort. On the last day of March a flight of F-105s from Korat attacked several wooden barges that had been found on the Song Ca River near Ban Moi, 70 miles northwest of Vinh. As Capt Hennigar (call sign Neptune 3) started his strafing run from an altitude of 6,000 feet, his aircraft was hit in the tail by automatic weapons fire. He flew about 15 miles to the west before ejecting and was fortunate enough to be rescued by a USAF HH-3E from Udorn. Although shot down on his 25th mission, Capt Hennigar went on to complete his tour with 110 missions to his credit, 100 of them over North Vietnam.
