| Lt Young was taking part in a strike on an AAA site near Ban Nathong in southern Laos when he felt a thump shake his aircraft (call sign Jury 200). All instruments gave normal readings and the section set off back to the carrier. On the return flight a wingman spotted a gaping hole in the rear fuselage of Lt Young’s aircraft. As the section was approaching the carrier Lt Young’s aircraft flamed out and would not restart. The wingman saw a fire near the Skyhawk’s tail and Lt Young ejected when it became obvious that he could not reach the Ticonderoga. |
